چکیده

We present results of a detailed study of X-ray flaring in the Z-track source Sco X-1 in a highly superEddington state made using high quality Rossi-XTE data from the PCA and HEXTE instruments. The emission model successfully used to explain the dipping LMXB, and other classes of LMXB in recent years, was applied to study the physical evolution along the Z-track which remains a major problem. This model consists of blackbody emission from the neutron star plus Comptonized emission from an extended accretion disk corona. As found in earlier work, major changes take place in the neutron star blackbody emission with kT increasing in flaring, and the blackbody radius RBB increasing substantially to a maximum value of 9.4±0.6 km, consistent with the radius of the neutron star, after which RBB decreases. Thus this result is a measurement of neutron star radius. The behaviour of Sco X-1 in flaring is compared with our previous results for the strong flaring that takes place in the bright dipping, flaring LMXB X 1624-490. Remarkably, during movement along the Normal Branch towards the apex with the Flaring Branch, the luminosities of both spectral components decrease, suggesting the possibility that Ṁ may decrease on the Normal Branch, contrary to the widely-held view that Ṁ increases monotonically along the Z-track. During flaring, we detect for the first time an increase of the Comptonization cut-off energy which may suggest heating of the ADC plasma by the neutron star flare. The energy of a broad Gaussian line at ∼6.4 keV does not change, but the intensity of the line increases in flaring suggesting either an increase in ADC size in flaring or the effects of irradiation by the neutron star.

On the X - ray fast - time variability of Sco X - 2 ( GX 349 + 2 ) Paul

We have analysed archived Ginga data on the Z source Sco X-2 (GX 349+2). We present the first detailed investigation of its X-ray fast-time variability, as a function of position in the Z track. During the two-day observation over the period 5–7 March 1989, the source was in the so-called flaring branch, and the lower part of the socalled normal branch. We found broad peaked noise with a centro...

We carried out an extensive Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer campaign, in 1997 June, to study Circinus X-1 during the active portion of its 16.55-d intensity cycle. The observations spanned 10 days, including 56% coverage for 7 d, and allowed us to find time segments which clearly demonstrate continuous evolution along the horizontal, normal, and flaring branches (HB/NB/FB) of a Z-source low-mass X-...

Relationship between Hyperactivity of Depressor Septi Nasi Muscle and Changes of Alar Base and Flaring during Smile

BACKGROUND Hyperactivity of depressor septi nasi muscle leads to smiling deformity and nasal tip depression. Lateral fascicles of this muscle help in widening the nostrils. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the nasal length changes and the alar base and the alar flaring changes during smile. METHODS Standard photographs are performed in the face and lat...

GX 17 + 2 : X - ray spectral and timing behaviour of a bursting Z source

We investigated the properties of the Z pattern of the low-mass X-ray binary GX17+2 in the X-ray colour-colour diagrams (CDs) and hardness-intensity diagrams (HIDs), and of the power spectra as a function of position in the Z. We used all EXOSAT ME data on GX17+2, a total of 6 observations during 1983-1986. We find that the Z pattern in the CD does not move to within ∼2 per cent between observa...
